Enrollment Procedures and Requirements

for FOREIGN STUDENT scholarship


    The foreign student scholarship is established according to the educational, cooperation exchange agreement signed and the understanding reached by China and other countries, organizations and institutions. It is divided into full scholarship and partial scholarship. The China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred as the CSC) takes charge of the application and management of the scholarship.

1. The duration of the scholarship

The duration of the foreign student scholarship includes the time of major study and the time of elementary Chinese language study. The duration of major study is:

Undergraduates: 4-5 years   
Master's applicants: 2-3 years   
Doctor's applicants: 3 years
General scholars: within 2 years
Senior scholars: within 1 year

2. The details of the scholarship

1). Full scholarship:

living allowance Given to the students per month by the institution, the standard is (CNY yuan per month):
  • a. undergraduates: CNY 800 yuan
  • b. master's applicants, general scholars: CNY 1,100 yuan
  • c: doctor's applicants, senior scholars: CNY 1,400 yuan

2). Partial scholarship: one or several of the first four items of the full scholarship.

3). International air ticket

a. According to the agreement signed or the understanding reached, the CSC will provide for certain international air ticket to China, return ticket or round-trip ticket.
b. Other students shall bear their own expenses of international trip.

3. Qualifications of the applicants

1). Applicants must be of non-Chinese nationality and be healthy.

2). The educational background and age limit:

a. Undergraduate applicants must finish senior high school and be under the age of 25.
b. Master's applicants must finish bachelor's study and be generally under the age of 35.
c. Doctor's applicants must finish master's study and be generally under the age of 40.
d. General scholars must finish their sophomore's study and be under the age of 45.
e. Senior scholars must obtain master's degree or hold academic tittles of vice professor or higher and be under the age of 50.

4. Submission of application materials

1). Qualified applicants shall fill out the Application Form for Foreign Student Scholarship (one original, one photocopy).
2). Submission of the following materials
a. highest diploma (notarized photocopy)
b. transcripts (notarized photocopy)
c. Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (Photocopy)
d. master's, doctoal applicants and senior scholars must submit two letters of recommendation(with Chinese or English translation).
e. applicants for music or fine arts shall submit one cassette of recorded audio materials of art work or six colour photographs of works (including two sketches and two colour paintings).
f. Applicants for undergraduate study in science, engineering, agriculture and medicine shall submit the Certificate of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry Tests. Applicants for undergraduate study in economics, trade and management shall submit the Certificate of Mathematics Test.

Applicants shall submit the above materials to the competent authority which will transfer to the CSC by April 30th 2001 visa the embassy in China or the Chinese embassy (consulate) in the dispatching country.

5. The approval of the scholarship

Processed by the CSC and enrolled by the institution, the CSC, by July 31st 2001, will send the Admission Notice and Visa Application for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China (JW201) to the competent authority in the dispatching country via the embassy in China or the Chinese embassy (consulate) in the dispatching country.

6. The handling of visa to China, verification of physical examination and residence in China

1). Scholarship holders shall bear general passport to apply for the student visa (X visa) with the original copies of Admission Notice, Visa Application for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China and Physical Examination Record for Foreigner to the Chinese embassy (consulate) and register in China with the original forms of the above documents.

2). After registering in the institution, scholarship holders shall, with their passports and the original form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner, go through the procedures of verification of their physical examination at the local quarantine office.

3). Scholarship holders shall apply within 30 days of arrival in China for the residency permit to the local police authority with their passports, Admission Notice, Visa Application for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China and the Certificate of Verification of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner.
